A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Shnoogiepoo
Adam Campbell is a homicide detective who’s stumbled across a connection to two seemingly unrelated cases. The use of a WWII firearm. As Adam traces its history, he meets Jillian Whitmeyer and learns that it has left a haunting legacy; it was brought back from the war, handed down from father to son, until it ended the life of a young girl – Jillian’s sister – when she accidentally shot herself. To make matters worse it was used by the girls’ mother, years later, to take her own life. When he learns of Jillian’s personal past she regrettably becomes his number one suspect. Jillian Whitmeyer is shocked to hear the gun has been used in other deaths because she relinquished it to police custody to be destroyed. What’s more shocking is Jillian’s attraction to the sexy detective. After a date – one where Adam was supposed to be getting answers not laid – Jillian decides she wants much more than one night with him. There’s only one little problem. Her dead sister, Heather. Heather has haunted Jillian since the day she died. Jillian is the only one who can see Heather, and so Heather demands that she live vicariously through Jillian and Heather gets to call the shots or people end up dead. Thankfully it’s not just Jillian who’s never met anyone like Adam before. I really liked the premise of this book. The paranormal aspect was kept grounded in reality making for a believable read, without having to stretch into the realm of imagination. Both of the main characters were well developed and very likable. The supporting characters were entertaining and I’m hoping to see more of them – especially Adam’s partner and Jillian’s assistant – from this author. All in all this was a great debut novel by Ms. Muller.

Book Blurb for The Secrets on Forest Bend
Another day. . . another dead body. When Detective Adam Campbell learns that a WWII gun is connected to several murders he’s investigating, he hopes that tracking down the killer will be as easy as tracing the gun’s history. When he meets Jillian Whitmeyer, the last known owner of the weapon, the case becomes anything but simple. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean it isn’t real. Adam soon learns that people who get close to Jillian have a bad habit of turning up dead. Jillian claims that the spirit of her sister, accidentally killed with that same gun, is responsible for the deaths. She warns Adam that he is likely to become the next victim. Adam’s been a lousy judge of women in the past, and this one’s obviously a nut case. Or is she? How does a just-the-facts detective deal with a ghostly serial killer and the sexy-as-hell sister she won’t set free?
