In the Shadow of a Hero

In the Shadow of a Hero is a nail biting, page turning, creatively told homoerotic romance that is one of the best romantic suspense books I've read in a long time. Not only were the characters beautifully written, the story was well paced and flowed smoothly from start to finish. I really enjoyed Anna Mayle's lyrical style of writing. Her scenes were gorgeously descriptive and her characters lived and breathed off of the written page.

Maxwell Thomas is running from the pain and sorrow in his life. Homeless and alone, he tries to make amends from the sins of his past. His mission is to make the children and the weak and feeble in the district he lives in safe and sound. He's a vigilante with a big heart and he has a huge conscience on his shoulder that won't allow him to walk away from an unfair fight or any other dire situation. even if it means he's the one who gets hurt in the end.

One night, when he saves a young male prostitute from getting killed, he finds himself getting mixed up with seedy characters from his past. This brings on memories and many of the past hurts he's been running from. His only salvation is this gorgeous blue eyed cop with a heart of gold named, Nick Kenna. Nick is determined to save Maxwell from his enemies and even from himself. Even as Maxwell tries to push Nick aside, Nick's determined to keep Maxwell safe and worm his way into the young man's heart.

I know my summary was a bit vague, but I don't want to give away the mystery of the storyline. I absolutely LOVED this book! Not only is it character driven, the creative storyline kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I read it. I thought both Maxwell and Nick were perfectly matched, and I was immediately swept up into their snappy dialogue and sexually charged chemistry. Even better, Maxwell and Nick had an emotional connection that was truly amazing to read and I loved every moment they had together in this book.

Even though this might be categorized as a `gay for you' story, it didn't read that way to me. It's true that Nick hadn't ever been attracted to males before, but his relationship with Maxwell read so natural that in my opinion it's just about two amazing men who meet and fall in love.period.

In the Shadow of a Hero has earned a spot on my keeper shelf. I know I'll be rereading it many times for years to come. This is the first book I've read that has been authored by Anna Mayle, and I won't be my last. This story won me over and I'll be looking for many more books by Ms. Mayle and I look forward to reading more of her amazing characters and creative storytelling abilities.
