Death by Chocolate Lab

Lucky Paws Petsitting Mystery, #1

"Death by Chocolate Lab" is about Daphne, a free-spirited pet sitter, who stumbles across the dead body of her sister's ex-boyfriend. With her sister being the prime suspect, Daphne must find the real murderer before her sister goes down for it.

I had such a delightful and fun time reading this book! Daphne, the main character, is spunky and funny. I love her attitude and the way she sees life. She's always quoting great philosophers and doing weird things. I really liked her.

Socrates, Daphne's basset hound, was just so adorable and hilarious. Daphne talks to him and he responds like he can understand her but it’s always in a funny or disapproving away. He was definitely one of my favorite characters.

The same with Jonathan Black, the detective on the murder case who keeps warning Daphne to stop investigating. He's serious and guarded, but he has some really funny moments. The way he and Daphne communicate and talk to each other sometimes had me laughing-out-loud. They have a great chemistry, even though they’re complete opposites, and I hope they definitely get together.

My favorite thing about the book was the ending. I DID NOT see it coming. I'm usually pretty good at guessing the bad guys in cozy mysteries like this, but this one totally surprised me.

The only slightly negative thing that I can say is that I wished that the ending scene, where the bad guy was revealed was a bit longer. It felt very short, but overall it’s not too bothersome.

Overall, I absolutely love this new series! The characters are hilarious and quirky and I just fell in love with them and the small town of Sylvan Creek. The mystery was unpredictable, suspenseful and brilliantly plotted. I can't wait for the next installment! Bethany Blake, the author, has a fan for life!

Book Blurb for Death by Chocolate Lab

Pet sitter Daphne Templeton has a soft spot for every stray and misfit who wanders into the quaint, lakeside village of Sylvan Creek. But even Daphne doesn’t like arrogant, womanizing Steve Beamus, the controversial owner of Blue Ribbon K-9 Academy. When Steve turns up dead during a dog agility trial, Daphne can think of a long list of people with motives for homicide, and so can the police. Unfortunately, at the top of the list is Daphne’s sister, Piper—Steve’s latest wronged girlfriend.

Certain that Piper is innocent, in spite of mounting evidence to the contrary, Daphne sets out to clear her sister’s name—and find Axis, Steve’s prize-winning chocolate Labrador, who went missing the night of Steve’s death. Aided by Socrates, her taciturn basset hound, and a hyperactive one-eared Chihuahua named Artie, Daphne quickly runs afoul of Detective Jonathan Black, a handsome and enigmatic newcomer to town, who has no appreciation for Daphne’s unorthodox sleuthing.

Can a free-spirited pet sitter, armed only with a Ph.D. in Philosophy and her two incompatible dogs, find the real killer before she becomes the next victim?
