Prayer for the Dead

An Inspector McLean Novel, #5

A fast-paced read from beginning to the end. This book is in a series, but does well as a standalone. The characters are well established and fully developed. Murder and mayhem abound in this novel. The chapters are tightly packed with details. And the details are what develop this story into a full case of murder.

Inspector McLean is busy dealing with some developers on his old plot where his home once stood. Sadly, there are a few mysterious murders and a couple of fires that break out to further complicate the situation. The inspector takes in person who needs temporary shelter while their home is being determined if it is safe to return. In gratitude this person takes the time to watch over the cats and cook for the inspector.

Meanwhile, the McLean is busy trying to track down the killer and discovers his developers have died in a mysterious crash. Further detecting reveals these men were behaving very suspiciously in the months leading up to their deaths. All of this comes with the added cost of politics and McLean is no stranger to murder or politics. The real question comes as to who set all these fires and committed murder. And McLean will know the answer one way or another before he's through.

This novel was my first read of this series and I enjoyed it immensely! The writing style is a bit different than what I'm used to, but the pace made it more enjoyable. Some of the chapters were fairly short which helped when it came to late night reading and needing to end it for the night. I really did not want to set the book down at all as I wanted to discover what was going to happen next in the novel. So enjoy!

Book Blurb for Prayer for the Dead

Detective Inspector Tony McLean is on the case when the search for a missing journalist uncovers the scene of a carefully staged murder. In a sealed chamber, deep in the heart of Gilmerton Cove, a mysterious network of caves and passages sprawling beneath Edinburgh, the body is discovered in a seemingly macabre ritual of purification. But McLean knew the dead man and can't shake off the suspicion that there is far more to this case than meets the eye.

For one thing, the baffling lack of forensics at the crime scene seems impossible. But that's just the first in a series of revelations about this case that seems beyond belief. Teamed with the most unlikely and unwelcome of allies, McLean must track down a killer--driven by the darkest compulsions and who will answer only to a higher power--until it's his own blood on the altar.

Shocking and suspenseful, Prayer for the Dead, the fifth installment in James Oswald's internationally bestselling series, plunges readers into the bone-chilling darkness of an underground world filled with ancient secrets.
