Twice Told Tail

A Black Cat Bookshop Mystery, #6

Hamlet the cat returns to Pettistone’s Fine Books for his sixth and final adventure. As Thanksgiving approaches, Darla Pettistone is preparing for the busiest shopping season of the year. They’ve recently launched their online store, where thanks to some funky software, an antique book is going for a suspiciously high price – and what’s more someone’s willing to pay it. Darla’s distracted from that, though, because she and her friend Jake are helping Reese’s fiancee Connie select a wedding dress. After that ordeal is over, Connie talks Darla into going to the antique store to pick out ‘something old’ – but their plans are thwarted when they stumble across the dead body of the proprietor’s brother. And when what looks like a heart attack turns out to be a deliberate act of suffocation, Darla doesn’t need Hamlet’s special senses to know that something isn’t quite right.

Ali Brandon saved the best for last. As the author indicates in her acknowledgements, this is the last book in the series and Brandon goes out on a spectacular note. It’s hard to say goodbye to these characters, and harder still to Hamlet, but the intricate mystery and fine plotting almost make up for it. – A definite five stars for a five star series – ROCCO LOTEMPIO
