Good golly, Miss Molly. Talk about sucking you in, this book does it and does it really well. The only reason I put this book down was because I had to go to work.
Angie (great name but spelled wrong lol) Pallorino is a police detective working sex crimes, a rough job by any standard. For Angie, it's a passion and a calling being an officer of the law, but it's also becoming an issue for her, being in the division she's in.
Angie is flawed, as are most humans. She's also broken, suffering from PTSD, and has a past that is shadowed and left her scarred, both physically and emotionally. She doesn't trust easily, and past mistakes have made her turn off even more. She copes in some unhealthy ways, and one of those ways shows up at her job.
When a victim is found whose injuries mirror crimes from the past, but are even more severe, she knows things are going to get hairy ... FAST.
Angie must learn to trust her partners and open herself up to others to get to the bottom of the crimes being committed, before the killer strikes again. It's a race against time that will pull you in, have you guessing until the end, and have you wanting to bite your nails to the quick.
The story tempo is perfect. The imagery is fantastic, if a little gruesome at times, beware if you can't handle blunt speaking and vivid detail. There is a nice romance element that balances perfectly with the mystery.
I eagerly await the next novel about this feisty, fierce, flawed and fantastic detective and her cohorts. How long until November?
He surfaced two years ago. Then he disappeared.
But Detective Angie Pallorino hasn’t forgotten the violent rapist who left a distinctive calling card—crosses etched into the flesh of his victims’ foreheads. When a comatose Jane Doe is found in a local cemetery, sexually assaulted, mutilated, and nearly drowned, Angie is struck by the eerie similarities to her earlier unsolved rapes. Could he be back?
Then the body of a drowned young woman, also bearing the marks of the serial rapist, floats up in the Gorge, and the hunt for a predator becomes a hunt for a killer. Assigned to the joint investigative task force, Angie is more than ready to prove that she has what it takes to break into the all-male homicide division. But her private life collides with her professional ambitions when she’s introduced to her temporary partner, James Maddocks—a man she’d met just the night before in an intense, anonymous encounter.
Together, Angie and Maddocks agree to put that night behind them. But as their search for the killer intensifies, so does their mutual desire. And Angie’s forays into the mind of a monster shake loose some unsettling secrets about her own past. How can she fight for the truth when it turns out her whole life is a lie?
