The Last Vampire

Kathryn Meyer Griffith gives us a wonderful look at vampires and how they would react to the end of the world. The world seems to be coming to an end, there are major earthquakes leaving the USA torn apart. There is a plague that is killing off everyone and global warming is making it hard to predict the weather from one day to the next. I really enjoyed reading this story and will read more by Kathryn Griffith.

Emma and Larry are just fixing to head home to their families when an earthquake hits.the biggest one yet. Setting most of St. Louis on fire, the building they were in starts to crumble and fall and they get out just in time, but Larry is badly injured. Knowing their families didn't make it through the quake they head towards a bunker that Larry had built and stocked for his family. Larry however doesn't make it and Emma is left all alone to fend for herself.

Emma gets really ill after being attacked and is rescued by Byron who takes care of her. He lets her know that he is a vampire although she doesn't believe him and thinks he is insane. He tells her there aren't many of them left and that the plague is killing them off too. He reads her mind which worries her. The she starts to feel strange and he tells her she will get better in time. One morning she rises and realizes that where she had been burned is completely healed and the burned skin is falling off. She realizes that he has turned her to a vampire such as himself.

Enter Matthew. Matt lost his wife and daughter in one of the quakes and thinks he is alone till Emma comes upon him and they begin journeying together towards the east coast to check to see if any of their family is alive.

Will Emma find any of her own kind left alive? What will become of her and Matt?

As the weeks go by they become fewer, more desperate and more ruthless.

Emma, as the world disintegrates around her, finds herself alone, family all have perished…and fending off an unnatural hunger as she becomes one of the undead. Fighting her unwanted destiny she’s determined to resist the bloodlust she feels, the need to kill and feed on humans, of losing her humanity, for as long as she can bear it…but she’s so hungry…and the night calls.
