Charley Davidson is a private investigator and the Grim Reaper. From an early age she was helping her father and uncle solve homicides with her "abilities". It was quite easy; all she had to do was ask the deceased who killed them. Being the Grim Reaper makes it difficult to be nomal but she has managed up until recently. With Reyes, aka The Son of Satan, back in her life, she spends a lot of time trying to figure him out and find him. He is drawn to her and at the same time, he is determined to stay away from her in order to keep her safe. If the demons hunting him track her down, they will have a portal to heaven. Needless to say, that would be bad. At the same time, a case falls in her lap via Cookie, her secretary and best friend. Seems a friend from high school, Mimi, is in trouble and wants to meet at a local coffee shop. When they arrive Mimi is nowhere to be found. There is, however, a cryptic message on the wall of the women's bathroom from Mimi. Mimi's life is in danger and it is up to Charley and Cookie to piece together what happened in the past to protect Mimi in the present.
This is an amazing book and a fantastic series! I fell in love with this series from the cover of First Grave with the awesome skull shoes. When Second Grave arrived, I started doling out the chapters to make it last! Darynda Jones has an amazing talent. She skillfully weaves the two genres of mystery and paranormal together with sprinkles of humor. In a lot of ways it is similar to Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series only ten times better! The sexual heat between Charley and Reyes is off the charts. Cookie is a wonderfully adorable, accident-prone sidekick. Charley is a smart alec but has a good heart. But the icing on the cake is that Ms. Jones could have written a book very similar to First Grave. There could have been another mystery that Charley has to solve. She could have found out a little more about Reyes. Rinse. Repeat. Readers would have bought that book and the subsequent ones. Other authors have done it. I don't want to give anything away so this will be vague but by vering away from the easy, forging a new path was a tremendous hook for this reader. What would have been anticipation is now more like an eager/impatient obsession for Third Grave Dead Ahead!
Charley Davidson, Grim Reaper Extraordinaire, is back in this sexy, suspenseful novel of supernatural shenanigans
When Charley is rudely awakened in the middle of the night by her best friend who tells her to get dressed quickly and tosses clothes out of the closet at her, she can’t help but wonder what Cookie’s up to. Leather scrunch boots with a floral miniskirt? Together? Seriously? Cookie explains that a friend of hers named Mimi disappeared five days earlier and that she just got a text from her setting up a meet at a coffee shop downtown. They show up at the coffee shop, but no Mimi. But Charley finds a message on the bathroom wall. Mimi left a clue, a woman’s name. Mimi’s husband explains that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old friend of hers from high school had been found murdered a couple weeks prior. The same woman Mimi had named in her message.
