A Wee Dose of Death

A ScotShop Mystery, #2

This is the second book in the series 'A ScotShop Mystery', however, it’s the first time I have read anything by this author. I am glad I did, because I loved her characters, the small town setting in which the story takes place, and the terrific mystery that had me guessing who murdered the professor until the end.

First, I fell in love with Fran Stewart’s characters in this book; especially Dirk, the grumpy, curmudgeonly fourteenth-century Scottish ghost who gives the heroine, Peggy, a hard time when she will not do the right and honorable thing of helping a fellow human in a time of need. If Peggy had her way, she would just stay in her shop, the ScotShop, or her house, unless she had a dire need for something. However, don’t think too badly of Peggy because when one her friends, Karaline, has an old college professor die under mysterious circumstances, Peggy jumps right in to figure out who killed him.

Next, this story takes place in a small town in Vermont that is surrounded by mountains, where everyone watches out for everyone else; well, maybe not the police chief, who comes off as a jerk nobody likes except his mom because he jumped to conclusions that are not based in facts....this is just one of the twists and turns of this story that also explains why Peggy and Dirk must jump in to figure out who was the “real” murderer of the professor. There are also a few red herrings and some other small side stories that kept my attention from the beginning of this book until the end of it.

Lastly, I like the fact that Fran Stewart took time in her story to build up to murder of the professor that took place a few chapters into it and not in your face in the beginning of it. In addition, unlike previous cozy mysteries I have read lately, I also like that we are introduced to the murderer near the middle of the book and not during the last few chapters in a teeny tiny bit of scene.

Can Peggy stop herself from falling in love with a beautiful Scottie dog named Scamp since she loves everything Scottish?

Book Blurb for A Wee Dose of Death

A second dose of Scottish charm from the author of A Wee Murder in My Shop.

While business is booming at the ScotShop in Hamelin, Vermont, proprietor Peggy Winn doesn’t have time to toast her good fortune thanks to her hot-tempered, fourteenth-century Scottish companion. Being thrust into the modern world hasn’t been easy for Dirk, but Peggy is at her wit’s end trying to keep the ghostie galoot in line.

But when the local police chief finds the body of Peggy’s friend Karaline’s college professor in a deserted mountain cabin, everyone is thrown for a loop. It seems the secretive professor may have been killed over his ecological work, an idea that’s only reinforced when Karaline herself is shot. Now Peggy and Dirk must set aside their differences to put the cold-blooded killer under loch and key...
