What happens when tragedy strikes and justice isn't forthcoming? It gets put in the past, or at least it appears so. Gin (Virginia Sullivan) has lost her sister Lily, whose body after 20 years has just now been found. Gin has a strained relationship with her parents and is trying to keep the town she grew up in as far away as she can.
She lost her childhood sweetheart after he became the prime suspect in her sister's disappearance. Now she has a new man in her life, but it isn't the same and never will be. She puts on a facade, pretending that it doesn't matter. But when her sister's body is found, she has to go home, to the past, to the man she loved and still loves, to try to find who murdered her sister.
The “DARK ROAD HOME” is about trying to get relationships back, facing the past and all the nightmare that comes with it. It is indeed a dark road home. Will there be light?
As much as a person wants that past life you could have had, you can't have it back. At least not the same life. Dark secrets once thought to be laid to rest have come back to haunt Gin and everyone around her. We all have our dark secrets just as Gin did.
Will Lily's murderer be found? Will Gin and Jake find what they lost? What about the new dark secrets that have entwined with the old?
Overall this is a great book with characters that come to life. The mystery will pull you through to the end and you really get a good look into the town, the characters and the past. Things come full circle as the book finishes up.
The summer after she graduated from high school, Gin Sullivan's little sister Lily went missing. Her family fell apart, not to mention her relationship with her high school sweetheart, Jake. Now, almost twenty years later, Gin is living in Chicago and working as a medical examiner when she gets the call: a body's been found in the woods outside her small hometown. It could be her sister. After all these years, it's time for Gin to go home and face the demons she tried to leave behind.
Confronting your past is never easy, but for Gin it also means confronting Jake, who was the prime suspect in Lily's disappearance. To find an answer to the question of what happened to her sister that fateful summer, Gin makes the difficult decision to use her talents as a medical examiner to help the police investigation. But as Gin gets deeper into the case, she uncovers a shocking truth that could change everything--if it doesn't destroy what's left of her and her family first.
