It is Winter Festival time in April Springs, North Carolina and this small town is looking forward to having a good time. Suzanne Hart, owner of Donut Hearts donut shop, is happy to have a little booth right outside her establishment to draw in more business. While the festivities are going on and people are enjoying themselves, not too far from Suzanne’s shop a dreadful murder has occurred. Right in front of the courthouse poor Muriel Stevens has been murdered in plain sight, but it seems no one saw the actual murder take place. The town cancels the rest of the festival and the police begin their investigation.
The strange thing is the woman who is murdered looks like Muriel, but they soon all discover it’s not who they think it is. Realizing it was a disguise worn to intentionally look like Muriel, the police look closer at the victim and find out it is Darlene Higgins instead. This really opens a can of worms up because Darlene is the same woman who stole Suzanne’s ex-husband away from her. Max left Suzanne to be with Darlene some time ago and now Max is the number one suspect in this murder case. If matters don’t seem bad enough, Max disappears and the police think Suzanne is hiding and protecting him so he won’t have to be questioned by them. Undoubtedly, it seems now Suzanne is just as much a suspect as Max is.
Not letting this situation rest, Suzanne teams up with her best friend, Grace, and an ex-cop, George, to do a little investigating for themselves on yet another murder mystery. As more details unfold, Suzanne and her friends realize there is much more to this murder case then what they have originally suspected.
Do the officers finally get to speak to Max? Where was he hiding all this time? Could he be the one who killed Darlene? Or is there another suspect that deserves to do some time in the local jail?
I just loved this third story in this donut shop series so much so that I just couldn’t put it down. Ms. Beck knows how to entertain her readers and she takes us along on Suzanne’s investigations so we see everything first hand as it develops. The characters are well-rounded and quite entertaining so it’s easy to fall in love with them early on. This is a wonderfully light cozy mystery that will have you guessing along with the characters just who really killed Darlene. It’s definitely a must have series to add to any mystery readers collection. I eagerly look forward to book four, Evil Éclairs, which will be coming out in the next few months!
