In the second installment of this mystery series we find that Suzanne Hart is the victim of yet another murder wrapped around her and her donut shop, DONUT HEARTS. This time, while doing a baking demonstration in a friend’s kitchen for the September Kitchens Extraordinaire home tour, Peg Masterson, the chair of this organizational home tour, is killed in the backyard. When the police start investigating the crime scene it seems they find one of Suzanne’s lemon-filled donuts in Peg’s hand, which was her favorite. All eyes are now on Suzanne and she must try to convince not only the chief of police, but also her state police inspector boyfriend, Jake Bishop, that she had nothing to do with killing Peg.
As the investigation unfolds, plenty of twists and turns happen that keep this story exciting. As she’s trying to find the murderer, Suzanne recruits her best friend Grace to help her start searching for answers to clear Suzanne’s name. This story is full of madcap mayhem when they both start interrogating the town people and find they’re knee deep with their own undercover investigation. No one seems to be safe from having this murder sentenced pinned on them and Suzanne will stop at nothing to prove just how innocent she is.
I think that Ms. Beck did a wonderful job with this second installment. I was laughing out loud at Suzanne and Grace’s interrogation techniques and how the chief was ready to crucify Suzanne once he found out she was meddling into other people’s lives to get the answers she was looking for. The characters are fun and enjoyable and the storyline hooks you in immediately. I’m not certain how many more books with be in this series, but I hope there will be many more I can sink my teeth into! I would definitely recommend this series to other readers!
