The Damage Done

The Damage Done by Hilary Davidson is a dark mystery that follows a woman’s roller coaster pursuit of the truth surrounding her sister’s apparent death.  An unfortunately toxic relationship with her addictive sister led Lily to flee from her New York apartment to Spain where she has been researching for her work as a travel guide writer.  Despite continuing to pay the rent for the apartment that they briefly shared, Lily has not had contact with her sister for months and is shocked to receive notice that her sister has died in the bathroom in a macabre re-enactment of their mother’s death at the same time of the year.  A search for the motives and movements of her sister over the prior months leads Lily through a morass of complicated relationships and rekindles the emotional entanglements that she had fled.  The police detectives that she encounters add to the confusing cast of characters that all seem to have their own agenda as the snippets that she learns about her sister’s life paint a picture of someone that she doesn’t recognize.  Lily must figure out who her true allies and enemies are before she herself becomes another victim to a mysterious assailant.

A somewhat depressing but well-written look at the tragedies that can accompany the self-destructive path of an addict.  The desperation and reluctant involvement of affected friends and family is showcased as Lily gets further entangled in the complications of trying to follow her sister’s journey during the past months while trying to come to terms with the emotional shambles of her own life.  A thought-provoking read.
